I first encountered this odd selection of birds when Linns gave details in its weekly new issues, but
this showed only the Blue and Yellow Macaw with the vague description "various birds". A supplier sent me a copy of the set to request identification so I was disappointed to see no Egyptian species. Apart from the macaw, I assumed the gulls were Herring Gull (Larus argentatus), and soon decided that the blue-grey bird was a Blue-grey Tanager (Thraupis episcopus). A correspondent in Canada suggested that the top-left bird was a Clark's Nutcracker (Nucifraga columbiana) and a search for images of this species using Google.com soon revealed the original photograph used by the stamp designer. He also suggested that the gulls were Western Gulls (Larus occidentalis) and I soon found the original photograph for this stamp. |
